Section 1 — First Things First

Before the data sheets, before the protocols, before anyone hands you a clipboard: your first job is to be a safe, predictable adult in that child's day.

Nobody expects you to be fluent on day one. Your BCBA expects you to show up, follow the plan you were trained on, and ask when you are unsure. That is the whole bar for week one — and asking is a skill, not a confession.

Rapport is not the warm-up before the real work. It is the real work. A learner who trusts you will tolerate harder demands, recover faster from errors, and give you cleaner data. Every minute you spend pairing early buys you weeks of progress later.

You will get things wrong. You will run a trial out of order, miss a prompt level, or forget to record something. Write it down, tell your BCBA, and move on. The RBTs who grow fastest are the ones who report their own mistakes first.

Quick checklist

  • Know the learner's name, reinforcers, and communication method before you walk in
  • Confirm which programs you are actually approved to run today
  • Have a pen and a notebook that is not the data sheet
  • Identify who you page or call if behavior escalates
  • Decide, in advance, the one question you will ask your BCBA after session
