Step 1 — Before Assessment Day

The renewal competency assessment is a demonstration, not a quiz. Your assessor is watching you perform tasks with a real or role-played learner and scoring whether the behavior meets criteria.

Confirm three things before you schedule: your certification expiration date, that your assessor holds a current BCBA/BCaBA (or qualified RBT-assessor) credential, and which task list edition your assessment is scored against.

Gather your materials ahead of time — data sheets, a written skill-acquisition plan, a written behavior-reduction plan, preference-assessment materials, and any graphs you maintain. Assessors will ask you to work from real documents, not from memory.

Practice saying the steps out loud. Most failed items are not skill deficits; they are candidates who performed the task silently and never showed the assessor the decision they were making.
